Anglican Religious Communities

BE

St Paul's Brotherhood (Brotherhood of the Epiphany)

Founded 1879

The Community was founded in 1879 in response to an appeal to the University of Oxford by the Bishop of Calcutta, India, for work to be done among the educated people of the city. The brothers lived and worked close to the University.

Later, branch houses were formed at Behala, Barisal and Jobarpar. The partition of India in 1947 resulted in the separation of the work in India and the work in what is now Bangladesh.

With the death of the Fathers in India, the work there is carried on by a priest of the Church of North India. The work of the Mission continues at Barisal under the supervision of the Church of Bangladesh where the Mission runs boarding schools, two Christian students' hostels, St Anne's Medical Centre, an orphanage and a primary school. The Brotherhood and the Christa Seva Sangha are both involved in this work.
