Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity
Founded 1882
Ours is a mixed life, which means that we combine an apostolic ministry with a contemplative lifestyle. The Rule of the Sisterhood of the Holy Nativity follows the model of the Rule of St Augustine of Hippo. As such, we strive to make the love of God the motive of all our actions. The four 'charisms', which undergird our life, are Charity, Humility, Prayer, and Missionary Zeal. Each of these spiritual gifts we desire to develop in our lives both for the fraternal unity they foster among us, and for the power they provide for the work of evangelistic ministry.
Our ministries are varied. We have an extensive ministry with children, working at summer camps, teaching Sunday School and conducting Vacation Church Schools. Sisters travel to conduct retreats, teaching and preaching missions. Many of the Sisters offer Spiritual Direction. We were asked to come to the diocese of West Virginia to provide a ministry of spiritual development, formation and growth throughout the diocese. Emmaus House opened in January 2000. We built a smaller Convent and moved here in December 1999 in order to open the house in West Virginia, to provide additional staff at St. Mary's Retreat House and to free Sisters for outside ministry.
