SSJD

Sisterhood of St John the Divine

Founded 1884

The Sisterhood of St John the Divine, founded in Canada, is a prayer- and Gospel-centered monastic community, nurtured by our founding vision, open and responsive to the needs of the Church and the contemporary world, continually asking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We are bound together by the call to live out our baptismal covenant in community.

The traditional religious vows of poverty, celibate chastity and obedience are the way we have chosen to live into our baptism. Living as we do in a time of immense change, the vows anchor us in the life of Jesus, and in the transforming experience of the Gospel. Important decisions which affect our lives are made at Chapter meetings and Community Days.

We are committed to a balance of life in which prayer, work, study, rest and recreation each has its place, and we commit to live with the tensions involved in seeking that balance. We are called to be a sign of Christ and forgiving love through the gospel imperatives of prayer, hospitality, spiritual guidance, ministering to those in need, working for justice and peace, reverence for the whole creation, promoting unity, healing and wholeness.
